Saint Julian
XVIII century. White chalk, Red chalk on dark toned paper. Not on display
This is a study for the figure of Saint Julian, depicted in left profile. The study of the drapery is very thorough, whereas the hands are barely sketched.
This work is preparatory for the corresponding figure in the painting The Apparition of the Virgin to Saint Julian in the Church of Santiago in Madrid, attributed to Maella. Its similarity to Goya’s canvas of a similar subject in the Church of Valdemoro – most likely dated 1790 – is very significant.
