Saint Michael and the Rebel Angels
Second half of the XVII century. Pencil ground, Pencil on laid paper. Not on display
In the upper register of the drawing, Saint Michael is depicted with a shield in his left hand. He raises his right hand in a triumphant gesture and is surrounded by other angels. In the lower register, two demons fall into hell before the terrified expressions of two other half-length figures that flank the bottom of the composition.
This work from Madrid dates from the second half of the century and is very close in style to that of Jiménez Donoso, to whom it could be attributed with certain reservations. The figures – which share many similarities with those of Coello – and the rough pen strokes are very characteristic of his oeuvre.
