Saint Thomas Aquinas
Last third of the XVII - Primer cuarto del siglo XVIII century. Oil on canvas. On display elsewhere
Saint Thomas Aquinas, full-length and standing upright, is depicted with the customary dress of the Dominican monks. He is wearing a white tunic with a scapular and a black cloak with a hood draped over his back. In his right hand he holds a feather from which spiked rays of light emanate and in his left a book, objects that refer to his doctrine. A sun hangs on his chest, which is an attribute of his wisdom. Furthermore, two large wings protrude from his back, alluding to the moment when the angels girded the saint with the cincture of chastity. Above his head, the Holy Spirit descends from the heavens in the form of a dove to inspire him. The figure of the saint, portrayed as a young, beardless man with monastic tonsure, is superimposed onto a landscape with a small church on the left.
