St. John the Baptist between St. Jerome and St. Benedict

Early XVII century. Wash, Pencil ground, Grey-brown ink on paper. Not on display

Andrea Bertanza was apparently from Padenghe sul Garda, in Northern Italy, and was active around 1600 –precisely the period of the present composition. The style has a strong Venetian ingredient, which would explain the second, later attribution to Palma Giovane (c. 1548-1628).
