Standing Friar
XVII century. Black chalk on laid paper. Not on display
The friar is depicted standing, facing forwards, with his head raised towards the left of the composition and his arms open in an expression of admiration.
The attribution to Murillo – which is recorded in the Lefort collection and accepted with reservations by Sánchez Cantón – is implausible. The drawing was probably made in Madrid by an artist from Carreño’s circle, but it does not seem possible to attribute it to a specific artist.
