The Archangel Sealtiel carring censer
First half of the XVII century. Oil on canvas. On display elsewhere
It was thought that this painting together with P005377 might be two survivors of a series recorded as belonging to Franciscan nuns in the church of the convent of Los Ángeles in Madrid: ‘7 paintings of equal dimensions of Archangels and Angels of natural size of 2 1/2 [by] 5/4 [varas]’. However, the size of the canvases in this series in the convent of Los Ángeles (210 x 105 cm) is, very different in width from those of these two paintings by Bartolomé Román. There is no record as to whether they were part of a series of seven similar to those in the monasteries of la Encarnación and Descalzas Reales in Madrid.
