The Coat of Arms of Friar Alonso de Santo Tomás / Transverberation of Saint Teresa
Late XVII century. Grey-brown wash, Ink on paper. Not on display
This drawing was possibly intended for the illustration of a book related to Alonso Henríquez de Santo Tomás. He was known as Friar Alonso de Santo Tomás (1631–1692), to whom the depicted coats of arms belonged. This coat of arms also appears on a print of the bishop’s portrait held in the National Library. An almost identical drawing (inv. 38672) signed and dated by Cornelius Schut in 1668 is held in Hamburger Kunsthalle. This leads to the attribution of the drawing to a follower of Schut at the Academía de Sevilla.
