The entombment of Christ
XVI century. Wash, Pencil, Pencil ground, Grey-brown ink on paper. Not on display
In his mind and late career, Cambiaso painted a number of pictures of this subjetct, including those in the Accademia Ligustica, Genoa and the Chiesa Parrocchiale, Castagnola di Framura. The Suidas list the present drawing as an autograph variant of the latter composition.
The likely prototype for the Prado copy is a drawing in the Albertina, Vienna, either by Cambiaso himself or a member of his close following (inv. no. 2754). Birke and Kertész record other variants, with full particulars, in Christ Church, Oxford; the Louvre, Paris; the Uffizi, Florence; the Galleria Regionale della Sicilia, Palazzo Abatellis, Palermo; the Musées Royaux, Brussels, The Nationalmuseum, Stockolm, the Hessisches Landesmusem, Darmastadt; and elsewhere.
