The Immaculate Conception
Late XVII century. Wash, Pencil on laid paper. Not on display
The Virgin of the Immaculate Conception is depicted standing on the crescent of the moon with her head raised and hands open. Cherubim and seraphim surround her in prayer.
This drawing is attributed to Espinosa, which is an untenable designation. Nevertheless, Sánchez Cantón accepted it with some reservations, since he admitted that it differs greatly from the canvas in the parish church of Liria bearing the same subject. In fact, it is a work from the end of the 17th century, possibly from Madrid and not very different from Francisco Solís’s style.
