The Immaculate Conception
XVIII century. Black chalk on laid paper. Not on display
This is a preparatory drawing depicting the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception standing on the crescent moon with her arms open and her head raised. Seated on a cloud above her, God the Father points to her with the sceptre, which he holds in his left hand. In the lower-right part of the composition, Saint Michael spears the devil in the form of a serpent at the Virgin’s feet. Child angels, some with attributes of the litany (roses, mirror) accompany the scene.
