The Lamentation before the dead Christ
1460. Mixed method on panel. Not on display
Formerly in the Royal Monastery of Santa María de Guadalupe (Cáceres), this solemn Lamentation was probably the principal image in an altarpiece on the Life of the Virgin. The disproportionate dimensions of the figures and lack of spatial depth, defined with a high horizon line, indicate that the artist - recently identified as the Master of the Triptych of Zarzoso - remained rooted in International Gothic formulas, although the voluminous draperies reveal a considerable debt to models by Rogier van der Weyden.
