The Noble Painter

Ca. 1642. Etching on laid paper.
Not on display

This print by Abraham Bosse provides an image of a painter´s studio. These illustrations, like many self-portraits of artists where some reference is made to the practice of art (by the inclusion of a painting or other implements such as brushes or palettes, for example), cannot be taken as reliable documents of what working spaces actually looked like. They are idealised views made with the aim of dignifying the painter’s trade. From the early Renaissance, artists had tried to distance themselves from the place allocated to them in the social order, presenting themselves not as mere craftsmen but as intellectuals who worked with ideas.
