The sitter was one of the key artists of the Nazarene movement consisting chiefly of Germain painters living in Rome. Franz von Rohden, the son of German landscape painter Johann Martin von Rohden, wanted to portray his master as other colleagues of his had done. This print was made in Rome, to where Cornelius had returned in 1845 after having painted in several German cities.
