The Resurrection of Christ

In this highly-symmetrical composition, a vigorous Christ rises from his tomb at the moment of his Resurrection, accompanied by angels and cherubim. Novelli, who was born and trained in Sicily, was strongly influenced by Van Dyck during the latter’s stay on the island; here, that influence is apparent in the bright luminosity and sensual colouring. Novelli worked on several occasions for the Spanish viceroys in Sicily.
