The Risen Christ
Ca. 1550.Not on display
The Risen Christ reveals Giulio Clovio’s exceptional technical skills as an illuminator and miniaturist. Trained with Giulio Romano and one of the leading Renaissance artists in those fields, Clovio here makes use of Michelangelo’s model of The Risen Christ for the Roman church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva, adding a loincloth and an architectural setting. Clovio’s works were collected by Philip II and by high-ranking members of the Spanish nobility, while also inspiring the artists working in the miniatures studio at El Escorial.
