The Third Council of Toledo

1862. Oil on canvas.
On display elsewhere

After the Third Council of Toledo (589), Reccared I († Toledo, 601) Visigothic king of Spain from 586 until 601, read a profession of faith in which he renounced his previous Arianism and accepted Catholicism, anathematizing Bishop Arius and thus declaring Arian theology a heresy.

This work was included in the 1862 National Exhibition of Fine Arts, where it was awarded an Honourable Mention. In the exhibition catalogue, the work is described as follows: ‘Reccared wished to solemnise the change of religion that had taken place in his nation. Therefore, he called a national council in Toledo, which was the third to be held in that city. The king appeared before the venerable assembly and gave a brief account of his conversion. He then exhorted the others to follow his example, offering them a document signed by him and by Queen Bada. In the document, king Reccared manifested his preference for the Catholic faith and his abjuration of the Arian heresy. This was received by the Fathers with great applause and some nobles subscribed to the dogma’.
