The Virgin and Child
XVI century. Oil on panel. Not on display
The work has a signature in the lower right corner that identifies it as the hand of Giovanni Battista Cima de Conegliano, which is apocryphal due to the clear disparity between the style of this author and the one noted here. A similar panel from the Alte Pinakothek in Munich (inv. 31, Madonna and Child, St. Jerome, St. Sebastian with a donor, oil on panel, 67 x 103.8 cm), by Marco Basaiti, presents a an almost identical solution in the figure of María, which suggests that the work in the Prado and this one share authorship with great probability, the painter having used a partial tracing to compose the scene.
