The Virgin and Child
Mid-XVIIcentury. Grey-brown wash, Pencil on yellow paper. Not on display
The Virgin sits facing forwards and holds a pomegranate in her right hand. With her left arm she holds the Christ Child, who gives a blessing with his right hand and holds the globe in his left.
The Museum of Córdoba holds a work that is identical in composition but made using a different and inferior technique – as though it were copy – and employing a more intense chiaroscuro. It has been unjustifiably attributed to Camarón.
This drawing is possibly Andalusian (from either Seville or Córdoba) and dates from the middle of the 17th century. It recalls Herrera the Elder’s oeuvre and anticipates that of Valdés Leal.
