The Virgin and Child
Ca. 1500. Oil on panel. Not on display
Mary stands in the middle of an archway nursing her son. She is in front of a brocade tapestry, at the axis of the composition. A landscape is visible on both sides of the tapestry, with a city in the background to the right. They can be seen over a low wall that encloses the garden —hortus conclusus— where the Virgin stands. Traditionally considered the work of a disciple of Jan van Eyck, this work is now attributed to Provost who, like other painters from Bruges, was inspired by earlier models, including Robert Campin´s Virgin of the Apse and Jan van Eyck´s Virgin of the Fountain at the Koninklijk Museum in Antwerp.
