The Virgin and Saint Joseph asking for Inn

XVIII century. Shell work on panel.
On display elsewhere

Series of six scenes dedicated to the Life of the Virgin (P4781 a P4786). "Enconchados", executed using a technique of Oriental origin, were very popular in New Spanish culture, and local artists developed and espoused them as one of their distinctive products. Their characteristic gleam stems from a combination of inlaid sheets of mother-of-pearl and fine layers of oil paint. There are both profane and religious examples, some belonging to large series, as well as elaborate frames.
