The Virgin Annunciate (?) / The Temptations of Saint Anthony the Abbot (?)
Late XVI century. Pencil, Ink on laid paper. Not on display
The Virgin is depicted seated next to a lectern with a book on which she rests her left hand. She turns her body to one side and extends her right arm in a gesture of surprise.
The attribution to ‘Carducci’ cannot be understood as having been to Vicente Carducho, whose style was markedly different from what this particular drawing demonstrates. If the attribution refers to Bartolomé Carducci, this cannot be acknowledged without reservations either, since there are no records of drawings following this technique that can be attributed to him with certainty.
The drawing must date from the end of the 16th century and is somewhat reminiscent of the El Escorial style.
The verso bears a depiction of The Temptations of Saint Anthony the Abbot (?); however, it is not visible because it is affixed.
