Young Man in a Feathered Hat
1647 - 1648. Oil on panel.Not on display
This portrait was listed as an original by Schalcken in the collection of the Duke of Arcos, an attribution that is maintained by Tormo and Valdivieso (1973). Behermann (1988) ascribes it to Karel de Moor (1655-1738), a follower of Schalcken. In the opinion of Rudy Ekkart, the delicate modelling of the face, the loose, precise brushstrokes in the rendering of the hair, the plumes of the hat and textiles, and the positioning of the highlights on the face reveal the hand of Pieter Hermansz. Verelst. However, Gregor J.M. Weber proposes to attribute this portrait to Melchior Brassauw (Mechelen 1709 – Antwerp, after 1757). His proposal is based on stylistic reasons and the similarity of the model with that of a couple of portraits signed by Brassauw, auctioned in Amsterdam, Christie´s, October 13, 2009, lot 67 (Information updated by Teresa Posada Kubissa, June 2023).
