Catharina II Ykens
Antwerp (Belgium), 1659She was the daughter of Jan Ykens, she was baptized in Antwerp on February 24, 1650. Being the daughter of a painter was crucial for her to pursue this art; she was also the niece of the still-life painter Frans Ykens, who in turn was the nephew of Osias Beert I. Her life was closely connected to religious circles. Her name is recorded in Saint Luke’s Guild in 1687. She specialized in still-life painting, primarily flowers, a genre then considered to be minor. In her compositions, she follows the schemes of Daniel Seghers, but she does not follow his execution style. The works attributed to her are scarce. (J. R. Sánchez del Peral, Encyclopedia of the Fundación de Amigos del Museo del Prado).
