Juana Roig Villalonga

Spain, 1877, 1941

She was a photographer and editor active in Spain between 1915 and 1926 who signed as "J. Roig. Antigua Casa Lacoste". From 1915, the Mallorcan Juana Roig Villalonga took over the business—initiated by Jean Laurent decades earlier and later run by the couple Catalina Melina Dosch and Alfonso Roswag. This business was subsequently run by Joseph Lacoste—under the name "J. Roig, antigua Casa Lacoste" and set up in the establishment previously owned by her predecessor at Carrera San Jerónimo 53. Juana continued to market the photographic archives of J. Laurent and J. Lacoste, as well as the production of postcards and the organization of exhibitions in her salon. Among Juana Roig's clients was thePrado Museum, to which she supplied material for its "Photographic Service" until late 1925.

Information taken from "Jean Laurent en el Museo Municipal de Madrid," Madrid, Museo Municipal de Madrid (2005), "La España de Laurent (1856-1886). Un paseo fotográfico por la historia," Madrid, S.G. Instituto del Patrimonio Cultural de España (2019), and the Prado Museum Archive.

The detail of her signature's monogram is taken from photograph HF01672 at the Prado Museum.
