Sancho, Dionisio

Ciempozuelos (madrid, Spain), 1761 - Mexico City, 1829

Dionisio Sancho was a Spanish sculpture who was born in Ciempozuelos in 1761. Educated since young age as an artist, he was Lieutenant of Sculpture at the Royal Academy of San Fernando, Honorary Royal sculptor and Director of Design of the Royal Porcelain Factory of Buen Retiro. His commitment to Fernando VII’s cause forced him to leave Madrid during the Independence War, following the Supreme Central Junta. He went to Mexico City, where he was Director of Sculpture of the Academy of San Carlos and Director of the Mint of Guadalajara and Zacatecas (Ferreira Fernández, M. “El escultor neoclásico Dionisio Sancho (1761-1829): nuevos datos biográficos”. Archivo Español de Arte, 99 (392), 2026, 1576).
