Teresa Nicolau Parody
Madrid (Spain), 1817 - San Sebastián (Spain), 1895She was the daughter of Isidro Nicolau y Puig, the honorary secretary of the king and chief official of the Parte de Madrid, and of Concepción Parody, daughter of the Consul General of the Two Sicilies. She began her painting studies with Vicente López and later with Luis Ferrant, eventually focusing on miniature painting, in which she excelled, although she also created lithographs.
On July 8, 1838, she was appointed honorary and merit academic at the Academy of San Fernando, and two months later at the Academy of San Carlos in Valencia. In 1842, she married historian Antonio Rotondo.
She participated in the public exhibitions of the Madrid Academy in 1833, 1834, 1836, and 1840, and in the National Exhibitions in 1858, 1867, and 1871. In 1878, she requested to undertake the restoration of all the miniatures and oils of the Royal Sites, a proposal that was likely not accepted. She passed away on August 13, 1895 (Espinosa, C. in: “Las miniaturas en el Museo Nacional del Prado. Catálogo razonado”, 2011, p.76).
Her portrait, by Vicente López Portaña, is cataloged as work P3304 in the Prado Museum.
