A conversation between Helen Oyeyemi and Valerie Miles

With the aim of contributing to excellence in artistic creation, inspiring and promoting experimentation and the convergence of the creative languages of literature and the visual arts, the Museum temporarily becomes a host for living writing through Writing the Prado. International Writing Fellowship sponsored by the Loewe Foundation. Each year the Museo Nacional del Prado invites two internationally renowned writers for stays of between three weeks and two months. The writer is provided with a workplace and has access to the workshops, library, collection rooms, and spaces reserved for the Museum's professional teams. He/she has the opportunity to be in daily contact with curators, technicians, restorers and the rest of workers of the museum as well as visitors.

Helen Oyeyemi, a prominent British writer translated into 14 languages who is known for her lyrical prose and experimental approach, who will talk to Valerie Milles, editor of Granta in Spanish, about her work, her approach to art and its influence on her literary work.

Helen Oyeyemi 

Helen Oyeyemi (Nigeria,1984) is a British writer currently based in Prague. Known for the originality and depth of her work, she has established herself as a distinctive voice in contemporary literature. Her writing has been translated into 14 languages.

Since her debut, Oyeyemi has been recognised for her innovative and experimental narrative style. She is the author of eleven novels, including Gingerbread (2019), Parasol Against the Axe (2024) and most recently, A New New Me (2025).

 She is the recipient of the Somerset Maugham Award and the PEN Open Book Award among others, and her novel Peaces (2021) was shortlisted for the Goldsmiths Prize.

Valerie Miles

Valerie Miles (New York) is an editor, writer, and translator, with a PhD in Literature and the Visual Imagination. She curated the Roberto Bolaño archive exhibition at the CCCB and has edited 28 issues of Granta in Spanish and English. Her highly acclaimed book A Thousand Forests in One Acorn, along with her translations and writing, have received PEN honors, The Southwestern Review’s essay prize, and a nomination for the prestigious Dublin Literary Award. Her work has appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times, El País, La Vanguardia, and The Paris Review, and she chairs the chair the selection committee for the Writing the Prado Fellowship, where she is literary advisor and editor of the fiction collection.
