The Spirit of Painting. Cai Guo-Qiang at the Prado

Museo Nacional del Prado. Madrid 10/25/2017 - 3/4/2018

Calendar Add to the calendar

Cai Guo-Qiang (born Quanzhou, China, 1957) is one of the most internationally acclaimed artists of recent decades. He was visual director and director of special effects for the Beijing Olympic Games while in recent years he has returned to painting, currently exploring the use of gunpowder as a pictorial material.

Interested in the European tradition, for Cai Guo-Qiang the masters represented in the Museo del Prado, such as Titian, Rubens, Velázquez, Goya and above all El Greco, embody “the spirit of painting”.

The exhibition now on display at the Museum features works created with burnt gunpowder on canvas in which the artist reflects on the qualities that define the art of his predecessors.

The exhibition includes works created by Cai Guo-Qiang during his artist’s residency in the Hall of Realms. The entire project is the subject of a documentary by filmmaker Isabel Coixet, produced by the Prado.
