Exploring the Prado Maps: Italy in Batoni’s Portrait of George Legge
Live video with Ana Moreno, Head of #PradoEducation, and Kevin Rodríguez Wittmann, Lecturer in Art History at the University of La Laguna (Tenerife) and author of the new educational itinerary The Prado and the World: Cartographic Perspectives, which will be available to attend at the Museo del Prado from June.
Kevin Rodríguez Wittmann (@kevinrwittmann) explains the importance of the map and the mementos of the Grand Tour of George Legge, Viscount Lewisham, one of the English travellers who visited Pompeo Batoni’s studio to be portrayed and preserve a memory of his journey through Italy in 1778. Due to the ill fortune of the English frigate on which the portrait was travelling, the Westmorland, the painting never reached its owner.
