One Work, One Artist: Two Eighteenth‑Century Peruvian Viceregal Portraits
Live video (in Spanish) with Fernando Pérez Suescun, Head of Educational Content at #PradoEducación, discussing the portraits Doña Joaquina Nimpha de Carvajal y Vargas, Countess of Puerto and her husband Don Fermín Francisco de Carvajal‑Vargas y Sotomayor y Alarcón, attributed to the Lima‑based painter Pedro José Díaz and dated around 1771.
These two paintings are on display on loan in Room 22 of the Museo del Prado, thanks to the generosity of the Fundación Don Álvaro de Bazán. They constitute a valuable testimony to American art, in line with the Museum’s institutional aim of integrating the cultural richness produced in the American territories during the viceregal period.
This is the work for May 2026 in the “One Work, One Artist” programme, which you can attend every Saturday and Sunday at the #MuseoDelPrado. Full schedules are available on our website: museodelprado.es.
