“Painting Brothels between Modernity and the Avant-Garde” by Javier Pérez Rojas

Conference delivered by Javier Pérez Rojas, PhD in Art History, as part of the lecture series Uninvited Guests, on 25 November 2020.

The exhibition Uninvited Guests. Episodes on Women, Ideology and the Visual Arts in Spain (1833-1931) offers insight into the position that the Spanish art system afforded women from the reign of Isabella II to the beginning of the Second Republic. Through the works on display, the exhibition seeks to present nineteenth-century women through their representations and the roles they occupied in society. In this context, the Prado Museum’s General Coordination of Education, always attentive to the interests of its audiences and with the aim of making the exhibition’s content more visible and accessible, organised a lecture series held in the Museum’s auditorium from 7 November to 16 December at 18.30. Leading specialists from the current scene explore different aspects of the exhibition, delving into the many rich and engaging readings that the visit offers to the public.
