Portable oratory with the penitent Saint Jerome, by Juan de (Vicente Juan Masip) Juanes, and Damián Forment
The Oratory with the penitent Saint Jerome is a portable work created for private devotional use. The principal figure, Saint Jerome, was carved by Damián Forment, one of the leading Valencian sculptors active in the territories of the Crown of Aragon. He used alabaster from the Ebro Valley (according to analyses carried out in March 2019 by the research team of the Area of Petrology and Geochemistry, Department of Earth Sciences, University of Zaragoza), which originally featured a surface that was partially gilded and polychromed. At a later date, an exceptional “alla romana” structure was designed to protect and enhance the sculpted panel. This structure was extended at the top and partially painted. Two small doors were fitted to it: on the exterior, Juan de Juanes depicted Saint Joseph with the Christ Child and Saint Luke; on the interior, beneath two arches, he painted Saint Vincent Ferrer and Saint Peter Martyr.
