This conference is part of the programme of activities organised to mark International Women’s Day.

Surrealist women painters, sculptors and photographers have been relegated in art history books to the roles of companions or lovers of their male counterparts. However, since the 1990s they have increasingly been the subject of study, exhibition and admiration. Among them are Meret Oppenheim, Remedios Varo, Leonora Carrington, Maruja Mallo, Ángeles Santos, Dorothea Tanning, Toyen, Kay Sage, Frida Kahlo, Dora Maar, Valentine Hugo and Lee Miller.
