This is the second of a series of three documentaries produced by the Prado Museum for the thematic route exhibition The Female Perspective: Artistic Patrons of the Prado Collections (1451-1633), on view from December 14, 2022, to April 9, 2023.

In terms of the relation to the arts, Mary of Hungary was surely the most astute member of her generation in the House of Austria. She was the main architect of the imperial image of Emperor Charles V and a skilled strategist who used art to serve the political interests of her dynasty. The selection of devotional works, mythological scenes, and portraits with political intention featured will help us to understand Mary of Hungary in a new light. In the first half of the sixteenth century, she was one of the key figures in the European political scene as well as one of the most prominent artistic patrons of this period.

The thematic route The Female Perspective aims to highlight the key role played by women from European royal houses in shaping the museum’s collections between in the temporal framework that spans from the birth of Isabella the Catholic (1451) to the death of Isabel Clara Eugenia (1633).
