The Most Intimate Motherhood of the Spanish Renaissance: the Divine Luis de Morales

Live video with Leticia Ruiz, Head of the Spanish Renaissance and Early Naturalism Painting Collection at the Museo del Prado, discussing "The Birth of the Virgin" and "The Presentation of Jesus in the Temple", two works by Luis de Morales—known as “the Divine”—dated between 1562 and 1567.

Leticia Ruiz explores Morales’s extraordinary technique—he was a contemporary of Juanes and Correa de Vivar—and the blend of rural and urban sensibilities in his painting. She refers to the “Moralesques”, who have at times diminished the appreciation of Morales, whose daughters Isabel and Catalina probably worked in his painting workshop.

From Room 52C at the Museo del Prado.
