The Recovery of Goya’s Painting, Portrait of the Marchioness of Santa Cruz
Lecture by Miguel Satrústegui Gil-Delgado.
The lecture addresses the history of Goya’s portrait of The Marchioness of Santa Cruz, from its creation in 1805 to its recovery by the Spanish State in 1986. It will outline key episodes such as Franco’s attempt to present the painting as a gift to Hitler, its subsequent passage through private collections, and its illegal export abroad in 1983. It will also examine the various administrative actions, legal proceedings and international negotiations undertaken by the Spanish authorities to prevent its auction in London and to secure its return to Spain for inclusion in the Museo del Prado.
