A unique training initiative for museum professionals

The Museo Nacional del Prado is launching the first edition of its Comprehensive Museum Management Programme Monday, May 5, 2025

The Museo Nacional del Prado is launching its “Comprehensive Museum Management Programme”. Characterised by a markedly practical approach, its study plan and learning principles are based on the Museum’s own professional experience and that of related institutions. With this educational project the Prado is renewing and reinforcing its commitment to training in the complex functioning of museum institutions, which are required to bring a broad concept of management to their day-to-day running in a response to the contemporary public’s demands. The application process starts on 14 May. The course will run for 10 months, from 30 October 2025 to 11 June 2026.

This course is aimed at university post-graduate students, currently active museum professionals, and specialists in other sectors interested in entering the museum field. The programme, which is unique in Spain, will feature content ranging from the conservation and management of collections to administration, visitor services and institutional communication. All this content is focused through a markedly practical and participatory methodology, which will also include an internship period at the Museum.

Miguel Falomir, director of the Museo del Prado, has emphasised that for those looking for professional development in this field, this new programme “represents the best way of sharing the knowledge of museum management accumulated over the course of years of excellence and led by its professionals.”

The Museo Nacional del Prado is reaffirming the interdisciplinary training commitment introduced by its Study Centre through the launch of a “Comprehensive Museum Management Programme”, an ambitious taught programme led by Marina Chinchilla, its Deputy Director of Administration. This initiative will offer a complete survey of the various aspects and functions that make up museum management.

The Programme, which is unique in Spain, will cover key areas such as collection management, budgeting and human resources, infrastructure, visitor services, communication and associated activities. It will count on a teaching team comprising members of the Museum’s professional staff, in addition to a range of external professionals of recognised prestige.

Aimed at university post-graduate students, currently active museum professionals, and professionals in other sectors, the course will take place from 30 October 2025 to 11 June 2026 in the teaching rooms of the Museum’s Casón del Buen Retiro, with a total of 240 in-person classroom hours, 120 hours of virtual classroom and 300 hours of optional work experience. The in-person sessions will be held on Thursdays from 9 am to 6.30 pm and the total fee for the course is €3,840. The number of students will be limited to 20.

All information will be made available on the Museum’s website during the application period, from 14 May to 20 June 2025.

Devised by the Museo del Prado, this academic course on museum management should be seen alongside the editorial strategy that led to the publication of the book La gestión del Museo del Prado, based on the Museum’s most recent experience and intended to contribute to the comprehensive training of museum professionals. The book reflects the experience of the Museum in both the management of its everyday running and in its response to exceptional situations, such as the celebration of its Bicentennial in 2019 and the public health crisis resulting from COVID-19 in 2020 and 2021.
