Caravaggio’s Inventiveness: Three Paintings at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna (V.O.)
Conference "Caravaggio's Inventiveness: Three Paintings at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna", given by Gudrun Swoboda (Kunsthistorisches Museum) on the 14th May 2025, as part of the conference series "Caravaggio and the Painting of Naturalism".
During Caravaggio's lifetime, his paintings aroused enthusiasm, but also irritation and, at times, discomfort. The enormous influence of his innovative use of chiaroscuro on the work of other artists, both in Italy and in the rest of Europe, has always been acknowledged, but no less significant were his inventions in terms of expressive gesture, narrative and pictorial temporality. To illustrate this, it is worth taking a look at the artistic reactions of other painters, Caravaggists and non-Caravaggists alike, who closely observed what the master was creating and were particularly sensitive to his novelties. The lecture analyses the artistic impact of three works by Caravaggio in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna: the Virgin of the Rosary, the Coronation of Thorns and David with the Head of Goliath. Each of these paintings reveals in a specific way what was new in Caravaggio's painting and what remains captivating in it.
