A Partridge and Peppers
1875. Oil on canvas. On display elsewhereThe painter Joaquina Serrano, a pupil of Joaquín Espalter, signed and dated these work and Bunch of Grapes (P6234) in 1875 and presented them a year later, together with a third, at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts. Although they were not awarded any prizes, they were acquired by the State and assigned to the Museo del Prado on 6 July 1876, in order to encourage the young woman in her progress as a painter. At the age of 19, Joaquina, who had also just been granted membership by merit of the Association of Writers and Artists, had managed to sell three paintings to the State, a feat she would never repeat despite participating in four more National Exhibitions.
