The painter Joaquina Serrano signed and dated this still life, an heir to the Baroque tradition and the language of Juan Fernández el Labrador, in 1875, and presented it a year later along with two other works at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts. Although they were not awarded any prizes, the paintings were acquired by the State on 6 July 1876 for 250 pesetas each, and were sent to the Museo del Prado as encouragement to the young woman in her progress as a painter.
