Agate cup in the form of a peach

XVII century. Agate Room 079B

A vessel formed by a single piece of agate with a handle in the form of a branch curved over an everted lanceolate bowl with smooth sides. The handle branches out at the base with carved leaves and flowers and another flower above it, visible only when the bowl is turned over. The flat profile of the upper part of the handle is frequent in the productions of the early Qing dynasty. The fruit represented is a peach, a symbol of immortality. This motif, frequently made in jade, was very popular in China, especially at the end of the Qing period.

Arbeteta pointed to two parallels as proof of the popularity of representations of this fruit in China, both preserved at the Palace Museum in Beijing. The first, from the Yuan dynasty (13th century), is a piece with a simple structure and a design similar to the one in Madrid, while the other, from the Ming dynasty and signed by Zingang of the Lu family (1522-1639), is closer to the vanished cups which once formed part of the Dauphin’s Treasure but were stolen in 1918. These were recorded by the Real Gabinete de Historia Natural with the number 11, and were listed as no. 131 in Arbeteta’s catalogue (L. Arbeteta, in press).
