The work depicts Águeda Bouligny y Timoni, the second daughter of José Heliodoro Rafael Bouligny (1758–1805) and Teresa Timoni. Águeda’s younger brother, Teófilo Bouligny y Timón, and his wife Ángela sponsored and raised her niece, Teresa Vergara Domínguez, who married Ricardo Balaca in 1870.
