In 1262, after the conquest and expulsion of the Muslims from the city of Cadiz, the King Alfonso X, known as Alfonso the Wise (P004737) had a standard with the cross nailed to the waters of the beach in Cadiz to symbolise his dominion over the sea separating the Iberian Peninsula from Africa and the empire of the Christian religion over Islam.
The work was included in the 1867 National Exhibition of Fine Arts, where it was awarded the third-place medal.
