An Elderly Man Seated, falling Asleep
Late XVI - Primer tercio del siglo XVII century. Black chalk on green paper. Not on display
Another representation of this scene named Elderly Man Seated Sleeping once existed. It was held in the Institute of Jovellanos and was destroyed in 1936. It is possible that both drawings originally had the same dimensions.
It is probable that this could be a study for the Saint Joseph’s Dream, since the church of the convent of the Padres Dominicos del Rosario in Madrid had a canvas by Carducho with this subject. This composition may even have inspired the Madrid-born Juan Montero de Rojas in his renowned Saint Joseph’s Dream, painted around 1668 for one of the altars of the convent of the Mercedarias de don Juan de Alarcón in Madrid.
