Apparition of the Virgin and Child to Saint Anthony
Late XVII century. Grey-brown wash, Pencil ground, Ink on laid paper. Not on display
Saint Anthony is depicted in ecstasy, held up by cherubim as he raises his arms to receive the Christ Child, who rushes towards him from the lap of the Virgin. She appears seated among clouds and crowned with stars. In the foreground, there is a foreshortened table with a skull and an open book.
This drawing dates from the end of the century, was inspired by a work by Claudio Coello, and was probably executed by a Valencian artist with a style similar to that of Conchillos. It may be under the same authorship as D278.
