Ca. 1786. Oil on canvas. On display elsewhere
This tapestry card depicts the game of boccie balls described in the Diccionario de Autoridades of 1726 as follows: ‘A game played between two or more people with medium-sized balls and a smaller one, which is rolled at a certain distance. The other balls are thrown towards the small one, and, the one who gets closest to it with his ball wins the game. This is a Tuscan term that has been introduced in modern times’. The composition is included in Francisco Bayeu´s Thirteen Sketches for Tapestry Cartoons (P002599).
