Cervantes, in his last days, writes the dedication of Don Quixote to the Count of Lemos

This painting depicts the last moments of the writer Miguel de Cervantes (1547–1616), when, already prostrate and assisted by his confessor, Francisco García, and his wife, Catalina Palacios, he dedicates his last work, The Labours of Persiles and Sigismunda, to his protector, the Count of Lemos. The painting was entered in the National Fine Arts Exhibition of 1884 (No. 525), where it was awarded the second-place medal. In the exhibition catalogue it was described via the following text: ‘With one foot already in the stirrup and in the hankering for death, etc.’
