Chapel of San Vicente de la Barquera
Ca. 1872. Oil on paper attached to canvas. On display elsewhere
On the left of the painting, a path opens up between the trees leading to a hermitage whose bell tower can be seen in the distance. This is the sanctuary of the Virgin of la Barquera, in San Vicente de la Barquera (Cantabria). At the side of the road, and almost at the edge of the left-hand side of the painting, is a devotional stone cross. On the right of the painting, the sea can be seen framed by a coastal profile. It is likely that the building outline is that of the sanctuary of La Barquera, an important centre of pilgrimage for the locals (Gutiérrez Márquez, A. in: Carlos de Haes en el Museo del Prado 1826–1898, Madrid: Museo del Prado, 2002, p. 112 and Paintings of the 19th century in the Museo del Prado: General Catalogue, Madrid: Museo del Prado, 2015, p. 259).
