For this representation of the Death of Charles, Prince of Viana, Vicente Poveda y Juan was awarded the third-place medal at the 1887 National Exhibition of Fine Arts. Charles of Viana (1421–1461) was the first-born son of King John II of Aragon and Blanche of Navarre (P005374), and therefore heir to the throne of both kingdoms. However, he fell into disfavour after his father´s second marriage to Juana Enriquez, mother of Ferdinand the Catholic (P006089) In spite of Prince Charles´s popularity in Catalonia, Ferdinand succeeded in getting the Catalonian monarch to take Charles, Ferdinand’s own son and legitimate successor, as prisoner. The scene depicts the moment of the preparation of the body of the Prince in the Royal Hall of the palace in Barcelona.
