Female Figure
1779. White chalk, Red chalk on dark toned paper. Not on display
This is a preparatory drawing for the figure of the maid in the central part of the fresco The Charity of Saint Casilda in the cloister of Toledo Cathedral. Two preparatory sketches for the fresco are extant: one in Toledo Cathedral and the other, in sepia, in the Ena Collection in Zaragoza. The Museo del Prado keeps several related drawings for the same fresco.
The figure is depicted standing and imposing silence with her left hand. The study of the clothing is very thorough, whereas the figure is barely sketched. In the fresco, this figure appears to the left of Saint Casilda, in the same pose as in this drawing. Only a cloak has been added to cover her shoulders.
